Omega-3 Products:

Q: What are the main benefits of taking Omega-3 fish oil?

A: Primary benefits are:

  • Omega-3’s tend to lower bad cholesterol levels and raise the good cholesterol.
  • They help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • They help to control high blood pressure.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids seem to limit the inflammatory reaction associated with lupus.
  • They also help to control constipation, hemorrhoids and diverticular disorders.
  • Omega-3 may even help to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, like breast, colon, and prostate cancer.
  • Omega-3’s are proven to be beneficial for brain development, especially in fetuses, newborns and growing children.
  • They lower the risk of depression and show positive effects in the treatment of patients suffering from depression.
  • Omega-3 appears to lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Omega-3 is used as a treatment for patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
  • Studies also found that EPA might prevent the development of asthma.
  • Research points out that omega-3’s might reverse atherosclerosis.
  • Omega-3 has been proven to be beneficial for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

Q: Will Icelandic Fourmula products help my cholesterol levels?

A: All of our products help improve the body’s cholesterol levels because they contain Omega-3 fatty acids: EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). These nutrients are known to improve the cholesterol level. Improvement comes from decreasing LDL, the “bad” cholesterol, increasing HDL, the “good” cholesterol, and reducing triglycerides which are fatty compounds that circulate in the bloodstream.

Shark liver oil aids the body with nutrients called G-E-lipids (glycerol ether lipids, also known as alkylglycerols.) In addition to their immunological benefits, these nutrients have been shown to improve the functioning of the liver, which is where the body produces cholesterol. Taking shark liver oil is a good addition to a regular supplement of omega-3 or cod liver oil.

Q: Do Icelandic Fourmula products contain toxins, heavy metals, or other pollution in them?

A: No, products from Icelandic Fourmula are purified through a process called “molecular-distillation”. This is a state-of-the-art process by which all harmful materials – heavy metals, mercury, PCB’s, and other toxins – are separated and removed completely from the fish oils we use. After our detoxification process, there are no detectable levels of toxins or heavy metals in any of our products. Our lab in Iceland uses a proprietary natural process to achieve these results and which is subject to regulations of the European Good Manufacturing Practice and Pharmaceutical Production Commission and ISO 9002 (an international standards code.). Our products are independently tested by 3rd party laboratories as directed by our pharmaceutical oversight agency that they are free from all toxins. Since Icelandic Fourmula products are the only fish oils made under pharmaceutical authority (the same standards as for prescription medication), you can be sure our products are the cleanest and purist you can find.

Q: Should I be concerned about taking an overdose of Omega-3?

A: The possibility of taking an overdose of Omega-3 is very remote, especially when taking a refined product such as ours. That’s because it does not contain non-soluble vitamins A and D, which can build up in your system, and because it is free of toxins. People have been known to take 3,000 to 10,000 mg per day without a problem. We do, however, suggest that you follow the recommended dosage of one to two 1000 mg softgels per day unless directed by your health care professional. Studies have shown you can take up to 16 grams per day without any problems. We should warn about taking if using blood thinners or before surgery.

Q: Is Icelandic Fourmula product "pharmaceutical-grade" and what does that mean?

A: All of our products are “pharmaceutical-grade.” The term “pharmaceutical-grade omega-3 oil” is a set of specifications regarding the amounts of the various fatty acids contained in the oil after processing. These specifications are defined in a pharmacopia, which is a compendium of specifications (also called monographs) for all types of organic and inorganic substances that people use for health or medicinal purposes. Omega-3 specifications are defined in the European Pharmacopia and our Omega-3 products conform to or exceed those standards thereby making them “pharmaceutical-grade” by definition.

The key to verifying this is the amount of EPA and DHA (the 2 most important fatty acids) in a gram of Omega-3 oil. It can vary a lot from one brand to another. Our products contain more than sufficient levels. Also important to understand is that some brands produce their oils with additives to manipulate the levels of EPA and DHA artificially. Our lab in Iceland produces a completely natural product.

Q: What's the difference between "pharmaceutical-grade" and "produced under pharmaceutical conditions?”

A: “Pharmaceutical-grade” is a classification of the potency and purity of the product. “Produced under pharmaceutical conditions” means that the laboratory where the product is produced and packaged is supervised and under the authority of a government agency that oversees companies that produce prescription medication in a sterile environment. Icelandic Fourmula is the only company producing fish oils that complies with these strict requirements.

Q: Are there potential side effects for some people who consume too much fish oil?

A: Many of the side effects often observed come from lower quality fish oil. Pharmaceutical-grade fish oil from Icelandic Fourmula is detoxified and concentrated to give you the highest levels of the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA with the lowest levels of other materials in the oil.

Q: Some experts say there's a concern about prolonged bleeding for people who consume too much fish oil. Is that true?

A: Relative to prolonged bleeding, the published data indicates that up to 16 grams per day of Omega-3 fatty acids will have the same effect on bleeding as taking 1 aspirin per day. Many clinical studies have found no significant increase in bleeding times at a constant level of 10 grams of Omega-3 fats per day.

Q: Is it safe for pregnant women to take Omega-3?

A: More and more research suggests that, for pregnant women, Omega-3 fats might be the most important supplement they can take to improve the brain development of the fetus. Of course, we recommend you first discuss taking any supplements with your physician if you’re pregnant.

Q: How will the fish oil interact with other medicines?

A: Any change in diet, for better or worse, will affect the metabolism of any drug. With fish oil, the types of conditions that people would usually take it for would include cardiovascular, inflammatory and neurological problems. In each of those cases, the fish oil very well may reduce the need for taking the drug. That’s why you should check with your doctor to determine what is the optimum amount of the drug required for this new change in your diet.

Q: Can people get the same benefits by eating fish, rather than taking supplements?

A: Eating fish would seem to be the most realistic way to getting fish oil in your diet. Unfortunately, much of the fish today has contamination with organic mercury, PCBs and DDT. This is why we get mixed messages that we should consume more fish, but at the same time we shouldn’t because of their contamination. The solution to this dilemma is the use of purified fish oil in which the toxins, such as mercury, PCBs and DDT, have been removed. Furthermore, the types of fish which are rich in fish oil are the types of fish most Americans do not like to eat – like mackerel, herring and sardines. To get the minimum recommended levels of Omega-3 fats you would need to eat at least a half a pound of salmon every day or 5 pounds of flounder. This is simply unrealistic for most Americans. And this is why fish oil supplementation becomes the best way to get adequate levels of these critical fats on a daily basis.

Q: Please list all of the Omega-3 acids found in your products.

A: In addition to EPA and DHA, the remaining quantity of oil contains the following Omega-3 fatty acids:

C18:3 – ca. 1%
C18:4 – ca. 6%
C20:4 – ca. 2%
C21:5 – ca. 1.5%
C22:5 (EPA) – ca. 4%

Q: What is the relationship between omega-3 and cancer?

A: Cancer is less common in communities that eat large amounts of fish, and the reason is thought to be the presence in fish of the long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates. Japanese women, for example, eat a lot of fish, and have a very low rate of breast, (and other) cancer. Men who eat fish frequently have a lower risk of prostate cancer. Stomach and intestinal cancers also appear to be less common in fish eaters. It is difficult to be specific about this though, because in such studies, there are often several factors that are different, and which could explain the lower cancer incidence. Laboratory studies have provided more support to the idea that the omega-3 polyunsaturates can reduce cancer risk. For example, tests have shown that cancer-treating drugs work more effectively when there is a good level of omega-3 polyunsaturates in the diet. Other studies have shown that adding omega-3s to the diet helps to reduce the level of certain hormone-like substances, which tend to be present in higher amounts in cancer sufferers. In summary, it can be said that while there are good grounds for believing that adding omega-3 polyunsaturates to the diet will help to reduce cancer risk, it is not yet proven beyond doubt.

Q: I have heard of the benefits of omega-3 for the developing fetus. Any info on safety or recommendation of fish oil capsules?

A: The long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates are essential for the optimal development of the fetus. They are especially important for the formation of a healthy brain, eyes and nervous system. Each is made up in large part from the long chain omega-3s and studies have shown that if the mother’s diet does not provide sufficient omega-3, then the formation and function of the fetal organs can be impaired somewhat. Oil-rich fish is an excellent source of the long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates. Approximately 20% of natural fish oil is made up of the omega-3 polyunsaturates, of which the two major components are EPA and DHA.

There is no information which suggests that fish oil capsules are not safe. On the contrary, they are free from the toxins that making eating fish risky. As far as intake recommendation is concerned, for the average pregnant woman, experts recommend an intake of 650mg of long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates per day, of which at least 180mg should be DHA. Thus to achieve this intake from Omega-3 capsules, a daily intake of 1000mg of oil will be needed, the amount found in one capsule.

Q: What is omega-3? Which products have it in them?

A: The omega-3 polyunsaturates are a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Fatty acids are the building blocks from which edible oils and fats are made up. The polyunsaturates are characterized by the presence of certain structural features which mark them out as being different from other fatty acids. The polyunsaturates are essential nutrients for humans and indeed most if not all animals. There are two important families of polyunsaturates, the omega-3 family, and the omega-6 family. Both are needed in the human diet for optimal health. The omega-6 family is found mainly in vegetable oils such as sunflower seed, sesame, corn, soy etc. The omega-3 family is found mainly in fish, and especially in the oil rich fish such as herring, mackerel, sardines etc. Small amounts of the omega-3’s are found in eggs. Certain vegetable oils such as linseed (flaxseed), rapeseed (canola) and walnut oil contain a type of omega-3, known as the short chain type (alpha-linolenic acid). To be useful to the human body, these short chain omega-3s must first be converted to their long chain form. While the human body can in theory do this conversion, in practice, modern diets and lifestyles reduce the effectiveness of the conversion systems. Roughly 10 times more of the short chain omega-3s must be consumed to have the same effect as the long chain form from fish oil.

Q: What are the benefits of EPA?

A: EPA, or Eicosapentaenoic acid, is one of the long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates found mainly in the oil from fish. Having EPA and its related polyunsaturate DHA, or Docosahexaenoic acid, (e.g. 650mg/day) is reckoned by those scientists studying this subject to be a sensible dietary goal. This amount will provide protection from heart disease, and perhaps cancer, depression and other common ills.

Q: Could you please explain any connection between omega-3 and psoriasis?

A: The relationship between psoriasis and the long chain polyunsaturates from fish oil is one which is quite well documented scientifically. Psoriasis is one of the inflammatory diseases and increasing the amount of the long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates in the diet is known to aid in bringing about a more anti-inflammatory state. The first trials in this area were carried out in the early 1980s and they showed that taking 10g of fish oil daily for 3 months brought about a lessening of psoriatic symptoms such as itching, flakiness and redness of skin, as well as a reduction in the amount of the body affected. Since then, several other trials have been carried out – all showing much the same thing. The disease is not cured by the omega-3 polyunsaturates, but it does become much easier to live with, and can be more readily controlled. Another aspect of the situation is that the omega-3 polyunsaturates can help to counteract some of the adverse effects of conventional psoriasis drugs.

Q: What are the neurological health benefits of omega-3?

A: A significant part of the structure of brain, nerves and the retina of the eye is composed of the long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates such as are only found in fish oil. The long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates are essential for the optimal development of a healthy brain, eyes and nervous system. Studies have shown that if the diet does not provide sufficient omega-3, then the formation and function of these vital organs is impaired somewhat. Depression or bipolar disorder is one common condition thought to be affected by brain omega-3 levels. Studies comparing the incidence of depression in different areas of the world have suggested that depression is less common in areas where large amounts of fish are consumed. Studies from hospitals have also recently provided another type of evidence that depression might well be linked with a shortage of the long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates from fish. Research published in the Archives of General Psychiatry (199; 56:407-412) reported the results of a study in which severe manic-depressives (bipolar disorder) patients were treated with long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates (10g/day) from fish oil. A control group was given olive oil instead of fish oil. After 4 months, the trial was stopped because the fish oil group had improved so much that it would have been unethical to continue to deny the benefits to the placebo group. Other areas in which the long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates from fish are thought to be involved include eyesight development in very young children, dyslexia, dyspraxia, hyperactivity, intelligence, problem solving ability, and even protection from mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. Research on all these areas is not yet well developed, but the indications are substantial, and consistent with epidemiological observations, and the theoretical predictions of experts in these areas.

Q: How much omega-3 can be obtained from fresh water lake fish, if any?

A: Freshwater fish can be a useful source of the long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates, but the amount is very variable, depending on conditions. The amount depends on the type of plankton and microscopic plants found in the water in which the fish are reared. Tropical areas often have different organisms to those found in more temperate areas and, as a result, can have low omega-3 levels. If the fish are farmed, the type of food they are fed will have a big influence. For more information relevant to your area, try asking local universities if they have more detailed information.

Q: I would like to know if it's OK for children to take omega-3 and how much?

A: Omega-3 is perfectly safe for children to take, though practical problems can make it difficult for children under 5. As far as amounts are concerned, for children between 5 and 10 years of age, it is suggested that an intake of around 1000mg per day of long chain omega-3 (from fish oil) would be suitable. If you want to use vegetable omega-3, you must increase this by 10 times to have the same effect. We recommend one capsule per day of Icelandic Fourmula Omega-3 for children under 10 and two capsules for children over 10.

Q: I am interested in starting to take omega-3 and was wondering whether there are any drug or vitamin interactions. Also, do I have to take the fish oil with a vitamin E supplement?

A: The omega-3 polyunsaturates are components of foods and as such not likely to interact with drugs, though it is difficult to be exact since there are so many drugs being launched all the time. If you are taking any drug on the recommendation of a physician it would be wise to inform him or her when next you visit.

Q: Why do doctors recommend aspirin for heart rather than fish oils?

A: Although a nutritional approach to heart health maintenance is better than drug treatment in most cases, there are no comparative data to show that a certain amount of omega-3 long chain polyunsaturates is as effective as routine use of low-dose aspirin in secondary prevention of heart attack, although there is certainly a body of evidence to suggest it has a role in heart health. If aspirin is prescribed then it is important that you do not switch to fish oil supplements without first consulting your doctor. If you are in good health, then fish oil supplementation will help keep you that way. The side effects of fish oil (improved skin condition and joint mobility to name just two) are bonuses. Many people take both aspirin and Omega-3 daily – ask your doctor.

Q: Does cod liver oil actually oil the joints - and if so, how does it get there?

A: It has been known for quite some time that the reason cod liver oil relieves joint pain and helps maintain joint suppleness and flexibility is that it contains omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturates – the most powerful anti-inflammatory found in nature. The omega-3’s are delivered to the site of the inflammation in the blood.

Q: Could you explain why I should take cod liver oil or fish oil supplements? I need convincing as I eat a healthy diet and feel fit.

A: If you eat plenty of oily fish (e.g. mackerel, herring, sardine, pilchard, salmon) then you don’t need to take a supplement, unless you’re worried about the toxins. The reason most people (90% of the population according to the Institute for Optimum Nutrition) are deficient in omega-3s is that the typical Western diet has changed so much since the turn of the century. Our reliance on processed foods, meat and dairy produce means that most of us eat less fish (particularly the oily fish which made regular appearances in the traditional diet of years ago) and fewer of the nuts and seeds that provide vegetable-source omega-3 (which although not as good as fish oils are certainly better than no omega-3s at all). It is advised that people increase their oily fish consumption and, if they can’t, that they take supplements. You may not notice the deficiency now (skin condition is a good indicator – are you sure your skin is as velvety, plump and blemish-free as it could be?), but as you age your body will feel the lack and you will be less able to fend off diseases associated with growing older. Fish and fish oils supply omega-3 nutrients. Cod liver oil also supplies vitamins A and D.

Q: Can you tell me does fish oil has any effect on the birth control pill? I have read that some "herbs" can minimize the effect by 20%. I realize that fish oil may not be an herb but it is an alternative therapy.

A: First, Omega-3 is not an “herb” but rather an essential fatty acid required by the body for normal functioning. Secondly, there is no known interaction of fish oil with the birth control pill.

Q: Do you use veggie caps for the cod liver oil and or shark liver oil?

A: We use bovine gelatin shells for our softgels.

Q: Do your products require refrigeration?

A: No, as long as they are not exposed to extremes of heat or cold for an extended length of time. Many people, however, prefer to store their fish oils in the refrigerator.

Q: Flaxseed oil has higher milligram quantities of Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 than fish oil. So why are fish oil capsules better than flaxseed oil?

A: Flaxseed oil contains short-chain Omega-3 fatty acids and the human body can convert these short-chain Omega-3 fatty acids with great difficulty into much lower levels of longer-chain Omega-3 fatty acids. The conversion rate is between one and five percent. It is only the long-chain Omega-3 fats that have the health benefits. This is not to say that flaxseed oil is bad. It is just not very good compared to fish oil because of the very inefficient conversion of the fats found in flaxseed oil to the long-chain Omega-3 fats found in fish oil.

Q: I've been advised to take Omega-3 by my cardiologist. Can you answer two questions for me please? 1. Tell me about your quality control, testing standards etc. 2. I have trouble swallowing big pills. Most of the Omega-3 supplements I've seen are huge. It would appear that your capsules are smaller. Could you please tell me how big the capsules are?

A: We manufacturer our products under pharmaceutical conditions, conform to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) as recommended by the FDA and ISA 9002 standards, and have our products independently tested by licensed 3rd party laboratories for potency and purity. Our softgels are 1000mg and are produced using a standard size 20 oblong softgel.

Q: What does pharmaceutical grade mean?

A: The term “pharmaceutical-grade omega-3 oil” is a set of specifications regarding the amounts of the various fatty acids contained in the oil after processing. These specifications are defined in a pharmacopeia, which is a compendium of specifications (also called monographs) for all types of organic and inorganic substances that people use for health or medicinal purposes. Omega-3 specifications are defined in the U.S. and European Pharmacopeia and our omega-3 products conform to or exceed those standards (higher nutrient values and less toxicity) thereby making them “pharmaceutical-grade” by definition.

The key to verifying this is the amount of EPA and DHA (the 2 most important acids) in a gram of omega-3 oil. It can vary a lot from one brand to another. Our products contain more than sufficient levels. Also important to understand is that some brands produce their oils with additives to manipulate the levels of EPA and DHA artificially. Our lab in Iceland produces a completely natural product.

In addition, our lab in Iceland uses a patented process to remove more of the toxins from the oil and is certified by European and Icelandic authorities as a pharmaceutical production facility, the same as those that are approved for producing prescription medication.

Q: What's the difference between "pharmaceutical grade" and "produced under pharmaceutical conditions"?

A: “Pharmaceutical-grade”, is a classification of the potency and purity of the product. “produced under pharmaceutical conditions,” means that the laboratory where the product is produced and packaged is supervised and under the authority of a government agency that oversees companies that produce prescription medication in a sterile environment. Icelandic Fourmula is the only company producing fish oils that complies with these strict requirements.

Q: How can you claim Icelandic Fourmula products contain the most EPAs and DHAs?

A: We claim that our oils contain the most EPA and DHA in a “natural” product. This is a very important distinction since many company use additives to increase the levels. We don’t believe in doing that.  Also, there is a range of EPA and DHA in all fish oils which changes seasonally and by the combination of fish used in each batch. The average for a natural, distilled product is 30% EPA and 20% DHA, with the range being plus or minus 10%. In our 1000mg softgels, the range of EPA, for example, is 275mg to 325mg. Most other companies disclose the average on their label. We disclose the lower end of the range to assure that it is always at least that amount.

Q: What if it doesn't work for me?

A: Some people feel the effects right away such as an increase in energy or sleeping more soundly. Others have to take it for a few months before they notice the maximum benefits. However, your doctor can look at your blood work and tell you if it’s working – i.e. Lower cholesterol levels, improved circulatory and cardiovascular function, etc. Omega-3 is an essential nutrient that your body requires and one that cannot be manufactured in our bodies. The effects may not be noticeable to you, but your body will benefit from it. Just as someone may not have symptoms before they have a heart attack, you may not feel the benefits of omega-3 in your body, but you will benefit from taking it nonetheless. However, Icelandic Fourmula does offer a full money-back guarantee on all unopened bottles so you can purchase risk free today.

Q: Can children take omega-3?

A: Absolutely and we specifically sell Regular Strength Omega-3 for children. The dosage for children under 12 is 1-3 softgels per day, a total of 280 mg of omega-3. These softgels are specifically made smaller and easier to swallow for children. If they have difficulty taking pills, you might also try our liquid cod liver oil, an excellent source of omega-3 and vitamins A and D. The fruit flavored oil, especially taken with juice, has no taste.

Q: What types of fish are used to produce omega-3?

A: The fattiest deep water fish are necessary to produce a product with the highest natural concentration of EPA and DHA, the two important nutrients in omega-3, and the lowest levels of toxins.  We use herring, mackerel, sardines and anchovies.

Q: How is the omega-3 oil produced?

A: To produce an omega-3 product that has the highest natural concentration of EPA and DHA, the two important nutrients, the fattiest deep water fish are necessary: herring, mackerel, sardines and anchovies. The oil is then processed to remove any taste and toxins. It is then concentrated through natural molecular distillation to bring it to a pharmaceutical-grade level. This is all done under authority of the Iceland Pharmaceutical Oversight Board. It is the cleanest, purest, and most potent natural omega-3 product available.

Q: What forms does omega-3 come in?

A: Icelandic Fourmula Omega-3 comes in a gel capsule. There are other companies that sell a liquid form but, to get a neutral taste, they must include chemicals and other unnatural additives that weakens the effectiveness of the oil. In order to produce a 100% natural pharmaceutical grade fish oil with the correct concentrations of EPA and DHA, it’s necessary to use the fattiest fish available: mackerel, sardines, herring and anchovies. The oil is purified, molecularly distilled, detoxified, deodorized, and concentrated, but it would still not taste very good in a liquid form.

Q: How long do I have to take omega-3 before I feel the benefits?

A: Your body will benefit from the omega-3 as soon as you start taking it, but as science has proven and the doctor has stated in his book, the long-term benefits build up with usage over time so we encourage you to take the product for a couple of months to see the positive benefits. Remember that we offer a full money back guarantee on unopened bottles.

Q: How does Icelandic Fourmula Omega-3 compare to other brands?

A: Before buying omega-3 it is important to ask: (1) is it pharmaceutical-grade containing at least 60% omega-3? (2) is it produced under the same laboratory conditions as prescription medication? (3) are the fish used in production from clean waters? (4) has it been completely purified of all toxins? And (5) is it a completely natural product, free of any additives?

Products from Icelandic Fourmula contain the highest naturally-produced concentration of omega-3 and it’s critical components, EPA and DHA. We’re the only manufacturer to produce omega-3 in prescription-quality laboratories under government supervision. The fish we use are from the deep, cold, unpolluted waters of Iceland. Our oils are molecularly-distilled by a patented process to remove all detectable levels of toxins and are free of any artificial additives.

In addition, oil from Iceland is produced under the world’s strictest guidelines in a lab that has been producing quality fish oils for almost a hundred years.  We are leaders in omega-3 research and production.  No other fish oil producer can say this.

Beware of brands that seem to come from Iceland but actually don’t.  Ask the manufacturer where they come from.

Q: Can I get as much EPA and DHA in less expensive brands of omega-3.

A: It is true that you might be able to get as much EPA and DHA from less expensive oils by taking multiple capsules. The problem with that is you also get more impurities and other less desirable parts of the fish oil. These are known as 18/12 oils – 18% EPA and 12% DHA. The other 70% of the content contains other oils that are not necessary and opens the possibility of adverse reaction. Icelandic Fourmula Omega-3 contains an average of 60% omega-3: 30% EPA, 20% DHA, and 10% other essential omega-3 fatty acids.

Q: Why is Icelandic Fourmula Omega-3 better than other brands?

A: As the leading brand of pharmaceutical-grade fish oils, our pricing reflects a good and fair value to our customers. Our oils are imported from Iceland where they are made from fresh fish caught in the clean waters around Iceland and then purified of toxins and concentrated to pharmaceutical standards. Our products are made in laboratories that are supervised by an Icelandic pharmaceutical oversight board – the same standards as those used for prescription medication. We then test each batch with an independent laboratory to assure purity, cleanliness and freshness.

All of these steps cost money but it’s worth it when our customers are taking our products for their health. Other brands simply do not do this.

Q: Are there any diseases with which it is unsafe to take Icelandic Fourmula products?

A: Generally speaking there are no known dangers from fish oil with any disease or condition. As for taking omega-3 with a heart condition, it is highly recommended. However, anyone with concerns about specific diseases or conditions should seek consultation with a health care professional before taking any medication or supplements.

Q: Can I take omega-3 fish oil if I'm allergic to fish?

A: Most fish allergies would probably not be activated by taking Icelandic Fourmula Omega-3 since almost everything is removed except for the omega-3 oil, which is an essential fatty acid that everyone requires. There are however trace quantities of other fish nutrients remaining in the oil and, since we don’t have information on what you are specifically allergic to, they might trigger a reaction. Therefore, it is best to check with your health care provider before taking any new medicines or supplements.

Q: Can I still eat fish?

A: Yes, although you should be careful about how much fish you eat due to the levels of mercury that are found in many varieties. That’s why omega-3 from Icelandic Fourmula is so wonderful. It’s pharmaceutical grade so it’s free of virtually all toxins and is the cleanest, purest and most potent natural omega-3 product available.

Q: What is the recommended daily dosage of omega-3?

A:  3,000 mgs a day contained in one dose of Icelandic Fourmula Omega-3.

Q: Can I take more than the recommended dosage?

A: There have been studies that suggest taking up to 10,000 mgs of omega-3 per day for bi-polar disorder. Of course we suggest that you seek advice from a health care professional before exceeding the recommended dosage of 5,000 to 10,000 mgs per day. It is vitally important that the omega-3 taken be pharmaceutical-grade to get the full concentration of DHA and EPA.

Q: Can I overdose on omega-3?

A: The possibility of taking an overdose of omega-3 is very remote, especially when taking a refined product such as our omega-3 maximum strength. That’s because it does not contain non-soluble vitamins A and D which can build up in your system and it is free of toxins. People have been known to take 5,000 to 10,000 mg per day without a problem. We do, however, suggest that you follow the recommended dosages.

Q: Should I take omega-3 with food?

A: If you have a sensitive system you may want to take the gel capsules with food but it’s not necessary.

Q: How should I store omega-3 capsules?

A: Omega-3 softgels should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Q: Why would I take omega-3 and shark liver oil together?

A: Omega-3 is for the heart, cholesterol and joints. Shark liver oil helps the immune system.

Q: Should I take omega-3 with cod liver oil?

A: Cod liver oil is another very good source of omega-3, so we would not recommend taking both Icelandic Fourmula Omega-3 and cod liver oil together. Shark liver oil, on the other hand, is recommended to support the immune system and doctors encourage people to take it together with their omega-3 for complete protection.

Q: What should I do if I don't feel well after taking omega-3?

A: Everybody is different and any medication or supplement may cause side-effects in some people. We have had a few reports of very mild belching lasting for less than a minute when taking the product on an empty stomach. These people say that 2 remedies are very effective: taking the product with food and keeping the softgels in the freezer before taking (the freezing seems to slow the release into the system thereby letting the body digest it more slowly.)

Q: Are there any side effects from taking omega-3?

A: There are no known medical side effects from omega-3 unless you are taking blood thinning medication, in which case you should check first with your health care provider. The vast majority of people experience no gastrointestinal discomfort from omega-3.

Q: Can I get more information about the toxicity studies?

A: The truth of the matter is that it is not impossible to remove all traces of mercury and other heavy metals from fish oil but it’s impossible to detect levels that are that low. No equipment exists that can detect metals in oil below a certain point, so when all metals are removed we are required by law to state “non-detectable levels.”

Our detoxification process removes virtually all toxins and heavy metals from our products to the point when they are below detectable levels. Our lab in Iceland uses a proprietary natural process to achieve these results and, subject to regulations of the FDA Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Pharmaceutical Production Commission, and ISO 9002 (a European standards code), samples of our oils are tested frequently for toxicity levels by licensed third-party testing companies.

Our factory in Iceland uses the company listed below for testing. They are used extensively by companies in the food industry and carry out analyses of all types of trace contaminants:

Liver Renew:

Q: What are cordyceps mushrooms?

A: Cordyceps mushroom is traditionally renowned as a potent liver, kidney, and adrenal tonic. In Taoism and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the kidneys and liver are the most important organ systems for being the house of “Jing” or our primal essence. Jing is the foundational energy of the body that nourishes and supports all other organ systems, and stores the emotion of fear, which we can see directly translate and make sense in the Western paradigm, with our kidneys housing our adrenals – which activates the body’s fight or flight response.

Studies show that Cordyceps mushroom may enhance aerobic capacity, strength, stamina, physical performance, promote fast recovery, support the liver, lungs, help lower cholesterol, boost libido and fertility. As a potent antioxidant and immunomodulatory agent, Cordyceps lowers inflammation and fights free radicals. This powerful medicinal mushroom improves many aspects of our health and overall wellbeing. Its anti-inflammatory benefits help elevate our energy and performance levels to new heights.

Q: What species of mushroom is cordyceps?

A: Cordyceps mushroom is a species from the Clavicipitaceae fungi family. There are over 700 species of Cordyceps mushroom. The most popular and widely studied species are Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris. These two species are the most widely studied that are used within herbal medicine. They are available on the market as a nutrient dense superfood. Another notable species worth mentioning is the Australian native Cordyceps gunnii.

Being a medicinal mushroom, Cordyceps has been used for centuries within ancient Chinese and Tibetan medicine to improve longevity, restore vigor, strength and support fertility and immune function. Cordyceps is incredibly unique in its ability to be both a Yin-nourishing and Yang-invigorating herb that helps balance and enhance numerous bodily functions and systems.

Cordyceps supports the liver, kidneys, and adrenals, boosts energy, fights fatigue and modulates the immune system.

Q: Where do they originate from?

A: Cordyceps was first recorded over 2000 years ago, and like all adaptogens, has an epic origin story. Cordyceps grows at elevations high up 3800m above sea level in the cold, harsh meadows of the Himalayan mountains in Tibet and Bhutan.

Its unique compounds have been studied and applied to prevent and treat numerous diseases ranging from liver disease, bronchitis, asthma, high cholesterol, cancer, infertility, chronic fatigue, and autoimmune conditions.

Q: What are the liver benefits of taking Cordyceps?

A:  Cordyceps is hepatoprotective and helps support a healthy functioning liver. The liver is the site of cholesterol synthesis and recycling (the body uses cholesterol to synthesise sex hormones). The liver also receives HDL from the body, breaks it down and excretes it, keeps arteries clear and prevents plaque buildup that cause cardiovascular disease.

When the liver is overburdened, damaged or not functioning at its optimum level, cholesterol levels become out of balance which causes an increase in blood cholesterol, inflammatory markers and metabolic disease.

The liver is also the site of bile synthesis which is stored in the gallbladder and released when we consume dietary fats. Bile mops up cholesterol, binding it to bile acids within the gastrointestinal tract and excretes through the bowels.

Our entire body is so interconnected. The anti-inflammatory benefits of Cordyceps mushroom supports both a healthy liver and helps balance cholesterol levels to support the cardiovascular system.

Q: Are there any potential side effects

There is very little scientific evidence that suggests Cordyceps mushroom shows harmful side effects. However, potential side effects and contraindications may occur with Cordyceps and cholesterol lowering drugs, having an additive effect. Additionally, anticoagulant, antiplatelet, cyclophosphamide and immunosuppressant drugs may have interactions.

Aside from these, Cordyceps mushroom has a very low toxicity, with diarrhea, constipation and abdominal discomfort being other noted side effects.

It’s also important to note that any herb that works to support liver function may also improve or alter drug metabolism.

Q: Where are Cordyceps found?

A: Wild Cordyceps mushroom (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) are found growing in the high elevation alpine grasslands on the foothills of the Himalayan mountains in Tibet and Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai and Gansu. Cordyceps sinensis can also be found less abundantly in India, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Q: How much Cordyceps should I take?

A: For optimal health benefits and results, we recommend consuming 1-3 grams of Cordyceps mushroom concentrated extract powder or supplement per day for a minimum of 100 days.

Q: Where to buy Cordyceps?

A: When choosing to buy the best Cordyceps mushroom product, you must select a certified organic source that is dual-extracted (water and alcohol extraction), CS-4 cultivated from authentic Di Tao regions, third party tested (safe levels of heavy metals and other contaminants), guaranteed potency (beta-D-glucan levels) and contains no added grains, starch, mycelium or fillers to ensure the highest quality and most efficacious product.
